A Character Out of History

The mycologist John Allen hypothesized that the original penis envy magic mushroom was probably found on the Amazon by Terrence and Dennis McKenna in the early ‘70s. Hamilton Morris (a journalist) claimed that the Amazonian variety was taller and thicker than the American version. The McKenna’s supposedly found and sampled a “colossal” patch of mushrooms growing deep in the rainforest. At the time, although magic mushrooms had been made illegal, their spores weren’t because they contained no psilocybin or psilocin. Smuggling the innocuous prints into the USA, Terrance McKenna returned with them to Colorado.
Then there is the story of psilocybe cubensis mycologist Steven Pollock, as claimed by Hamilton Morris. Pollock was mailed some of the original Amazonian prints from the McKennas and isolated the Penis Envy Strain. He mailed Rich Gee, a mycologist and print vendor, a spore print labelled ‘Penis.’
Eventually, John Allen found Rich Gee selling spore swabs of Penis Envy. A user on Shroomery said they had a print from Terrance McKenna’s collection. Possibly as a result of Rich Gee claiming to have supplied him with a print directly from Terrance McKenna.
A few things are certain. There are some pretty well-known names associated with this P. Cubensis variety. Another thing for certain, their genetics made them a lot stronger than an average cubensis mushroom, and, well, shaped it like a penis. With a rich and sordid history involving smuggling, genetic mutations, prescription drug dealing, robbery, and murder, this variety of psilocybe cubensis is one for the history books.
